The poet and doctor William Carlos Williams lived and practiced medicine in my hometown of Rutherford. If you’re not familiar with his work, he wrote the world-renowned The Red Wheelbarrow. It’s a four stanza poem with each written to look like a wheelbarrow. This piece brought him fame in the literary world.
Williams was also a racist. Know your history, Rutherford.
Rutherford is home to the Williams Center, a venue that houses the Rivoli theatre– a Vaudeville-era stage. It was widely used back in the day, even by Buster Keaton. And me. It was where I performed stand up comedy for the first time, and I was one of the last performers there before it was shut down for safety concerns by Bergen County. I take great pride having shared that stage with the ghosts of some of the greats.
For real, it’s crazy haunted.
